Mission

Sight for India’s mission is to eradicate curable blindness from low income states of India by fundraising in North America.

Approach

The low income states of India were earlier known as the BIMARU (meaning sick) states even in the government corridors. BIMARU was first coined by India’s foremost demographer, Ashish Bose and was an acronym for Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Unfortunately the shoe fits even now and all these states still lag behind in all aspects of human well being. Sample this - the state of Bihar has the lowest HDI (Human Development Index), 81% of the population are poor and has backlog of blindness of 1 million.

As poverty and blindness go hand in hand, it has been well documented that people who are blind are either landless agricultural labourers or daily wage workers. The major barrier, apart from lack of money, thus is that they cannot afford someone from their family to bring them for treatment. To restore sight to them, it is imperative that they are identified and brought for free treatment to hospitals.

The Sight for India team will therefore only partner hospitals who have a dedicated approach to bring in such patients to their facilities for treatment. Clear geographic and sector focus, targeting the poorest sections and promoting the “reach-out” approach makes us unique.

80% BLINDNESS IS CURABLE
MANY CHILDREN ARE BORN BLIND
GLOBAL COSTS OF BLINDNESS ARE HUGE

EMPOWER LOCAL HOSPITALS,
TRANSFORM PEOPLE’S LIVES.
Lack of funds holds back many hospitals
in low income states. We will raise funds
for them to provide more free
eye surgeries to the poor.

We partner with eye-hospitals for high-volume, high-quality surgeries in the poorest states.
WORKING WHERE IT
REALLY MATTERS
The states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh,
Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan
have the highest concentration
of blind people
– this will be our geographic focus.

Stories of inspiration from the
most difficult areas in the world

Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital
Sight.Life.Hope

Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital (AJEH) restores sight in the most difficult state of all, Bihar. Currently doing 65,000 surgeries annually, 80% completely free, AJEH is India’s third largest eye hospital. As our primary partner, AJEH will help us deliver our first goal – blind free Bihar by 2022. That means 400,000 surgeries in the next 5 years.
Half the people needing surgical intervention in low-income states in India do not have access to cataract surgery.
